The Sunday papers are reporting that the Spanish club are preparing a £25m bid for the Liverpool striker, but his manager has different plans.

"We want to keep the player," said Houllier. "We love him at Liverpool and the fans love him aswell. I think he's keen to stay so at some stage.

"I'm sure we'll find an agreement but nobody from Real Madrid has phoned me yet and even if they'd phoned me with the figure quoted we won't consider it because we want to keep the player."

When asked about Owen's fitness for today's game, Houllier added: "He's happy because it was touch and go. He wanted to play because it was a big game for us and I think he did the job for 75 minutes.

"There's a lot of games coming up and that's why I took him off."
