Owen sets 80 point target

The 23-year-old England star feel that such a points target - which was reached when Liverpool finished second to Arsenal in the 2001/2002 season - can be achieved if Gerard Houllier brings the right players to the club this summer.

"We know the targets we have got to hit to become champions. We know that we can get 80 or so points, we got that many a few years ago," explained Owen.

"Obviously it's a big season for us coming up. It was a big step backwards last time, so we need to get back on the improvement ladder. We know the players are capable of achieving the ultimate because we've hardly changed the squad over the years."

"Obviously the manager will add one or two players to the squad and let's hope they give us a major lift as well.

"It's not for me to pick the team but certainly he will be looking to strengthen in certain areas.

"We have always had a good defence so maybe we could do with a bit of reinforcement going forward."
