Owen will miss the Reds

The 24-year-old forward didn't even have time to bid farewell to his team-mates at Anfield when Madrid swooped fohis services in a bargain £8m deal and the England man admits it was a wrench to uproot so quickly.

Owen said: Because everything happened so quickly I never had the chance to say goodbye to a lot of people. I'll miss everyone. Liverpool will always be part of my life. That will never change.

"Whenever I can I'll watch them and Melwood will be my first port of call when I'm in the city. I'd never say a bad word about Liverpool and I hope the feeling is mutual.

"The hardest part for me is not moving house or my family to Madrid, it's definitely been coming to terms with leaving Liverpool. I'd just reached a point where I thought it was time to bite the bullet and seek a new challenge.

"It's not my place to comment on other players' business, but a week before I left, Danny Murphy was in a position where he didn't want to leave Liverpool but that decision was made for him.

"You just never know what's around the corner in our game. It can work for or against you. For better or worse, football is a business as much as a sport now and you have to understand that as much as the game itself."

"If a Liverpool supporter saw me in the street, I hope they'd be disappointed but still think to themselves 'Well, it was Real Madrid, how can you turn a club like that down? A chance like that doesn't come around every season'.

"I think the most disappointing aspect of any transfer is the first question everyone asks is 'Who was to blame?' In this case, there really isn't anyone at the club or on my part to blame. Everything was amicable. The chairman, the manager and Rick Parry shook my hand when I left and I'm 100 per cent sure they meant it.

"It just so happened in this situation I could make my own decision about whether to stay or go so it's easy for people to try and blame you if you decide to go. I think there is a nasty part to our game where people want to hold it against you if make that decision.

"People talk about the fee and it's understandable when fans get disappointed when a player leaves, but the way football is nowadays it's natural players think about moving on when the time is right.

"The fee has nothing to do with me, but a deal worth £12m, which I believe it is in total, isn't bad for someone who came through the Academy.

"When the opportunity to go to Madrid came I had to give it a go. I'm realistic to know if I still had five years left on my Liverpool contract, my value would have been such that Real Madrid wouldn't have been able to afford me. The timing of their move worked for me.

"I think players who stay at one club all their life are harder to find. If there's one person I know who would love to spend their whole career at Liverpool it's probably Jamie Carragher. I'd love Carra to be a mainstay of that team for as long as he plays.

"For all the time I was at Liverpool, I did sometimes feel some of the local lads got more stick when things went wrong, or in his case didn't get all the credit he deserved for being a top player. I hope that changes.

"When I was a youngster and I broke into the side, there was a buzz of excitement and a sense of enjoyment which you can never recreate at the same club seven years later.

"I think part of me was looking for that feeling again and that's what it's going to be like when I play for Real Madrid for the first time. I also think I'll develop as a player.

"I've left Liverpool with so many great memories. I can recall being an excited 11-year-old kid at the Vernon Sangster Leisure centre, working with Steve Heighway and Hugh McAuley.

"I still think of the FA Youth Cup win as a highlight and the unbelievable time we had winning the three cups in 2001.

"I think about all those goals. I feel I've repaid something to Liverpool. I think I represented the club in a good light in everything I did.

"I played my heart out for 300 games. I'll never forget the good times I had and the friends I've made."
"I've just joined Real Madrid and my intention is to have a long and successful career here. But if the time ever came in the future where I did go back to England, Liverpool would be the first club I'd look to.

"But that's a decision for a long time down the line."
