Owen won't pay the penalty

The 24-year-old's tentative penalty was easily saved by Finnish keeper Anti Niemi when the score was delicately balanced at 1-0 to Paul Sturrock's battling Southampton side.

The costly failure, coming just weeks after another Owen penalty miss in the FA Cup defeat at Southampton, has led Houllier to make clear his faith in the striking talents of the England star.

Houllier said: "He's my penalty taker. He's been a bit unlucky with his last two but he's a good penalty taker. I like him when he takes a penalty - I'm not going to blame him.
