Liverpool's under 18's side are currently bottom of the league so the tie with Wealdstone was a potential banana skin but the Reds came through with flying colours to the delight of their coach.

Owens said: "I am very pleased and the boys did really well. It was a nice home draw for us but games like this can always be a potential banana skin.

"Our keeper Dave Roberts made a very good save early on to keep Wealdstone out before our extra ability began to show. I was very pleased with the strikers and obviously Conal Platt with his hat-trick and Karl Noon also scored.

"Paul Barratt was very good in midfield and he is very direct and causes defences all sorts of problems. He uses the ball well and usually he is a central midfielder but he can go wide. He showed exactly what he is all about during the game.

"Danny Guthrie gave a captain's performance and scored a very good goal. He is a key player in the team and has been a regular in the reserve squad this season."
