Despite having Danny Smith sent off in the 80th minute Owens' side were able to hold out for a welcome victory. However, the win did appear in doubt when Bolton were awarded a penalty but Lancaster was equal to it, earning the praise of his manager.

Owens said: "We were grateful to our goalkeeper Paul Lancaster who made a superb save when Bolton were awarded a penalty.

"I thought we didn't play that well but we got ourselves into the lead and held on. It was nice to win after an indifferent start to the season.

"We had the wind with us but too often our passes were overhit."
