Smicer has been out injured all season with a serious knee injury and has only just returned to the first team squad.

Berger suffered a similar injury while at Liverpool but recovered and is now impressing at Portsmouth. Smicer says that the return to form of his former Liverpool team mate is an inspiration as he fights to regain his place in the Reds' first team.

Smicer said: "Patrik has given me a great motivation and a big boost. We speak a lot and he wished me all the best to get back in the Liverpool team.

"He is really enjoying his time with Portsmouth and he is a really important player for them. His knee looks fine and he has hit some crackers, some great goals this season!

"It was good for me to play 90 minutes for the reserves, I had no reaction and I am getting there."
