Parry was delighted to with the Reds Worthington Cup triumph, Houllier's sixth cup triumph during his Anfield tenure, and believes it is a further indication of why the Frenchman has the full support of the Anfield hierarchy.

Parry said: "It was a fantastic day and in many ways it was the most satisfying cup win of all our recent successes," he said.

"It's always satisfying to beat Manchester United, but especially in a cup final.

"On a personal level, I'm absolutely delighted for Gerard because I know how hard he, his staff and the players have worked for this.

"As everyone knows, our belief in him has never wavered at any stage. Sunday was a reminder of the heights he, the players and his staff are capable off. It was no surprise to us.

"We always knew what was possible and what the players could do, so while we are delighted to have won on Sunday, it's not as though we didn't expect Gerard would bring us more tropies.

"We didn't need any kind of breathing space. We have always been happy with the direction we were taking under Gerard. Sunday hasn't changed that. We never take any notice of what anyone outside the club is saying because it simply wasn't an issue. Our view was very clear and nothing's changed just because we have won the Worthington Cup.

"Obviously all of us are delighted with this victory, but our plans would have continued regardless of the result. Gerard has always had our full support."
