Patience is the key

Diouf has yet to have a run of games in the first team, with his appearances a mixture of the exciting and ineffective.

And former Red Hansen believes that in order for Diouf to become a success at Anfield he'll have to follow in the footsteps of Salif Diao.

He said: "I am sure he will now be hoping for a regular run of games in the Premiership, but he may have to be patient.

"When a team are going through a bad patch, as Liverpool are, then a manager will usually pick players who have proven themselves in the past to get through it.

"It's hard to throw players in who are trying to make an impression when you aren't on the greatest of runs.

"Diouf is still settling in and I think he needs to look at his fellow Senegalese team-mate Salif Diao to see how he adapted. Diao has fitted in brilliantly and looked at home in the Premiership straightaway.

"It's up to Diouf to follow his example and prove himself on the pitch the next time he is given a chance."
