All eyes were on the £20million Spanish striker, but he handled the pressure well and slotted home the opening goal of the game to silence the critics.

"Fernando Torres was typical really - if you give him the right service he'll score goals," said Steven Gerrard after the match.

"He's all about running in behind defenders and he's got terrific pace. In pressure situations he's shown he can finish so a bit more of that please."

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez was also delighted with his new striker.

"I think that Torres has showed the quality that he has," he said. "The finishing was really good.

"I think its important for all the strikers to score but especially Torres because people were talking. He scored one in pre-season and now one at home I think its very positive."
