Chairman David Moores is currently on holiday in Scotland and won't be back until the middle of the week but when he returns he will find that he has received plenty of applications for the Anfield top job.

As speculation on Houllier's future grows, representatives of several managers have been trying to contact Liverpool officals about the post.

The board are refusing to enter any such discussions while Houllier is still at the club but it has been an eye-opening few days for them.

Valencia boss Rafael Benitez, Charlton supremo Alan Curbishley, Porto's Jose Mourinho and King Kenny Dalglish are said to be the front runners to succeed Houllier.
