Pongo staying

Le Tallec is currently looking for a loan deal after Rafael Benitez told him he would not be getting regular games for the Reds this season. While his close friend Florent Sinama-Pongolle understands Le Talent's decision he has no intention of making the same move himself.

"I know a lot of people won't understand why Anthony has made his decision," says Pongo.

"He's my friend and I respect his choice, but I'm different. For me, it's important to stay here. I'm young and obviously I want to play games, but I feel I still have work to do at Liverpool.

"I really think this will be a good season for me and the club. There will be more opportunities for me, I'm sure.

"People have said to me it could be an advantage or disadvantage Gerard Houllier has left. Last year I was given my chance and started well but then played less at the end. The only thing I didn't understand was why, if I was good on the pitch in one match, I wasn't playing in the next game.

"I know I'm the youngest of the four strikers and Michael Owen and Djibril Cisse are the strikers likely to get the first opportunity to start.

"Djibril is my friend and I will do what I can to help him settle at Liverpool. I know the qualities he has and I think he can do great things for us. I hope that's what happens.

"I'm a player who still has to prove what he can and can't do on the pitch. I want to improve.

"If I don't show people on the pitch I am a good player, I can't expect to be selected. It's up to me to show the boss what I can do. I know it will be tough competition and I need to work hard. Whenever I get my chance, I will be very happy and then I will do my best to stay in the side."
