The 18-year-old Frenchman, who is likely to be a part of the Liverpool squad next season alongside fellow Le Havre stars Anthony Le Tallec and Alou Diarra, insists that he is more then ready to make his mark on a team famous for its glorious history of success.

Pongolle, speaking to LFC Magazine, said: "Liverpool is a great club, a legendary club, with a fantastic history. I hope I can help make some more Liverpool history.

"I have been over to visit the stadium and the facilities. They are superb, magnificent. That's the only way to describe them. Everything about the place indicates just what a great club Liverpool is.

"The atmosphere in the stadium is fantastic, as it always seems to be in England, and when you hear the song: 'You'll Never Walk Alone', you really feel the heart of the club beating. It's very stimulating.

"If I'm at Liverpool, my ambition is to become confident enough to cope with everything, to enjoy myself and to do everything possible in order to show people that the club was right to sign me."
