Pongolle given reserve start

Unlike former Le Havre team-mate Anthony Le Tallec, Pongolle has not been included in the first team squad as of yet this season and he will see tonight's clash with Newcastle as a fine oportunity to prove his worth to manager Gerard Houllier.

Pongolle will be joined in the Liverpool team by fellow Frenchman Djimi Traore and highly-rated young English midfielder, John Welsh.
