Praise for Carra

Sami Hyypia was tipped to partner Steven Gerrard in centre midfield in the absence of Momo Sissoko, Xabi Alonso and Bolo Zenden but in the end Rafael Benitez opted for Jamie Carragher to play there. Carragher's performances earned him the praise of Hyypia.

"Carra did brilliantly in midfield against Portsmouth and I think he deserved his man-of-the-match award," the Finn told LFC Magazine.

"He looked as if he has always played in that position, and most importantly for me and Daniel Agger, he gave us a lot of protection. He understands how important that is.

"I was very impressed with his distribution – he always found a red shirt.

"He started his Liverpool career there and I'm glad he was chosen to fill that role – because the manager had been talking about playing me in that position!

"Don't get me wrong, if the manager had asked me to play there for Liverpool then of course I would have said yes.

"The people in England will only have seen me play in the back four but in Holland I used to play there quite often – when I was younger than I am now!

"It was also the position in which I made my debut for the Finland national team. I used to enjoy playing there because you see a lot of the ball and are always involved in the game."
