"I know Stevie can play well down the middle, but he is our captain and he knows the most important thing is the team," said the Liverpool boss.
"I did speak to him before the Arsenal game and explained we needed him on the right for that one but he'd play more down the centre in future. It's a possibility he will be in the centre at Middlesbrough.
"But it's about finding the right balance for the team. I've never had a right winger before who's scored 23 goals and you want to use that.
"When you have someone like Gerrard who can do that, and you've got Alonso and Sissoko, you can have good balance to the team."
