Dudek was adjudged to have brought down Darren Bent in the final minutes of the first half. The home side converted the penalty and Bent quickly added a second to win the game.

"It wasn't a penalty," said Benitez. "The defeat is difficult to explain.

"We need to learn from our mistakes as soon as possible. It wasn't a penalty but we lost the ball when we were controlling the game."
