Benitez selected an inexperienced side for last Saturday's friendly with Wrexham and will have been pleased with the performances of the likes of Besian Idrizaj, Jay Spearing and Jack Hobbs.

With the first teamers returning to match action against Crewe this Saturday, the youngsters will find it harder to get first team games, but Rafa Benitez has challenged them to show him they are ready to make the breakthrough.

"You know my idea, I like to use young players, but it depends on them. You can say that you'll use three, four or five of them, but at the end of the day you can't do that if they aren't ready," said the Liverpool boss.

"They need to show me that they want to play in the first team."
