Luton gave Liverpool a real scare in yesterday's third round tie, taking a 3-1 lead before finally losing 5-3. After the game Rafa Benitez was full of praise for the Championship side who gave the Reds their toughest game of the season.

"Luton made it very difficult for us and they did a very good job," said the Liverpool manager.

"Steven Gerrard scored a brilliant goal to give us the lead then we just went to sleep. And by the time we had woken up, we were 2-1 down.

"At half time I told the players we needed to do more and show that we are a better team than them.

"We had to find solutions to the problems we had in the first half and we needed to use the wingers more. Sinama Pongolle did very well when he came on and he, Gerrard and Cisse caused Luton problems.

"I was always confident that we could come back and win this game. Xabi Alonso played very well for us in the second half and played like a really good holding midfielder. He scored two fantastic goals."
