Rafa promises improvement

Although Liverpool have done brilliantly to reach the Champions League final, their league form has been inconsistent this year. Rafael Benitez believes this id down to a lack of stength in depth and has promised to rectify the problem next season.

"When you play 14 games in the Champions League and only win two immediately after, that tells you everything. We haven't had enough quality in our squad to maintain the level.

"There have also been times when you can see the players have been giving their maximum concentration on the Champions League and that's had an impact in the league, where their minds have not been clear enough.

"Next year, our idea is to ensure we have enough quality players to compete for at least the three top competitions. This year has been difficult. Next year, the players we have will make it a lot easier for me, as long as everyone stays fit, of course.

"When I analyse our year I can see we have produced a bad season away from Anfield "In fact, it's been a really bad season away. The Arsenal game last week summed it up. We played okay for 15 minutes, badly for 30 minutes and then quite well in the second half.

"We know our big problem has been the same all season. Inconsistency. This is what will change next season.

"We have suffered 11 defeats away from home and that's not good enough. When you have that record, it's not a normal season for a club like Liverpool.

"I can think of so many mistakes in games which cost us. Against Manchester City, we had the ball in the last minute, gave it away from a throw-in and then conceded a goal on the counter-attack. That cost us the game.

"There were four or five games where we lost 1-0 when we did nothing in the match, but the other team did nothing either. But we made the mistake and lost the game.

"You have to learn how to win or draw those games. This is what must change.

"The difference between ourselves and other sides is the ability to win these types of away games 1-0. When I look at Arsenal or Chelsea's record, that's where I see a big difference. The kind of games we lose 1-0 away from home, they have shown they have the character to win 1-0.

"If you compare this season to last, you'll see we won more games at home this year and we've won only one less away. The big difference is last year Liverpool drew eight games away and this year we've drawn three.

"Those five points have been important because we'd still be fighting for the fourth spot. We also lost to rivals like Everton and Bolton, which not only hurt us, it gave them an important boost."
