The former Valencia coach faced losing the hugely influential captain before he even spoke to the 24-year-old midfield star, but Parry is relieved that the pair will work in tandem for the Anfield cause in what will be a hugely important campaign.

Parry said: "Rafa is delighted with yesterday's announcement.

"He'll be talking to Stevie later and I'm sure it'll be a very positive conversation. It wasn't the easiest thing in the world having to tell him two days in that he was in danger of losing his captain.

"To be fair, we had told Rafa about the situation during his negotiations and it is very gratifying that it didn't diminish his desire to become manager of Liverpool.

"Rafa went out to Portugal and spoke to the three England players as a group. It was very constructive. He liked the things they had to stay and I'm sure they enjoyed what Rafa had to say."
