Rampant Reds run riot

The Reds hadn't won away from home in the Premiership all season but the first win when it came was an emphatic one. Two goals from Craig Bellamy, another from Dirk Kuyt and a Lee McCulloch own goal, all before half-time, gave Liverpool a comfortable 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

Bellamy gave Liverpool the lead after nine minutes when he shrugged Wigan defender Matt Jackson off the ball and placed a superb strike beyond former Red Chris Kirkland.

Bellamy doubled the Reds' lead fifteen minutes later when he raced onto a Steven Gerrard through ball and again dispatched an excellent strike past Kirkland.

Dirk Kuyt scored his first ever away goal for Liverpool on 40 minutes when Bellamy turned creator and set him up for an easy tap in at the far post.

Just before the half time whistle it became 4-0 when Wigan midfielder Lee McCulloch deflected Gerrard's cross into his own net.

The Reds continued to have chances in the second half, Steve Finnan coming the closest to adding a fifth, but there was to be more goals in the game.

Liverpool had the best chances but Wigan had a few themselves, and a goal at 1-0 or 2-0 could have made this a tougher game for the Reds but Pepe Reina made a couple of vital saves to earn his fifth successive clean sheet.

The Reds' next away fixture is at the Valley and now that their away day jinx has been ended they will be looking for another three points.
