Speaking to the Saints' website, Burley said, "He is an England Under 19 international and a talented player who has been involved with the Liverpool first team."
"So when it came to our attention that Liverpool were willing to loan him out to a Championship club we felt it was a great opportunity to bring him in, have a look and give him first-team experience," he added.
And Burley is well aware of Guthrie's talents. "He is a creative player who is not afraid to get stuck in. He is young and hungry and this is an ideal chance for him to get experience in the Championship."
