Reds after Mexes?

The 22 year old French defender has already expressed an interest in playing in England and Houllier, who was in France this week, has made discreet inquiries about the player.

Mexes' agent Oliver Jouanneaux has already commented on his client's desire to move to the Premiership.

"Auxerre have told us that Phillipe will be sold this summer. There were reports saying Spain was Phillipe's preferred move but that is not true."

"I think, and having talked to him, that the English style would be best for him as he would have more time to play- which is what he's good at."

"He will be expecting to play in the Champions League, but what will be essential is what the club and the coach has to say to him. All this specualtion is not unusual and he knows how to live with it."

It is football's worst kept secret that Mexes' Auxerre team-mate Djibril Cisse will be joining Liverpool in the summer and Houllier will hope that the lure of coming to England alongside a team-mate of five years will help Mexes opt for Liverpool.
