Dirk Kuyt played lone striker in the absense of Fernando Torres, and it was his early goal which gave the Reds momentum.

Alberto Aquilani started his first home game for the Red and played his part, working well in midfield and creating chances.

Albert Riera had an opportunity to extend the lead in the second half but his header was tipped onto the crossbar by Gomez in the Spurs goal.

But when substitute David N'Gog was introduced he caused further problems and won Liverpool a last minute penalty, which Kuyt converted at the seond attempt.

The victory gives Benitez's side three valuable points, moving them to within a point of fourth-placed Tottenham.
