Reds beaten

A much changed team were beaten 1-0 by Fulham yesterday; only Pepe Reina and Jermaine Pennant started both yesterday's game and Tuesday's win over Chelsea.

Emiliano Insua made his second Liverpool appearance at left-back while Gabriel Paletta partnered Sami Hyypia at the back. Alvaro Arbeloa played at right-back.

Mark Gonzalez came in at left midfield while Xabi Alonso and Momo Sissoko were the central partnership. Robbie Fowler and Craig Bellamy led the line up front.

Liverpool's defence made a wobbly start to the game but soon settled down thanks to the experience of Sami Hyypia. With Xabi Alonso pulling the strings in midfield the Reds began to take control of the game without ever really threatening a goal.

The Reds did create an excellent chance just before half time when some neat footwork from Pennant created a great opportunity for Robbie Fowler but unfortunately Fowler mis-hit the ball from inside the six yard box and the chance went begging.

The second half started with Liverpool on top but it was Fulham who opened the scoring against the run of play when Clint Dempsey gave Reina no chance with a shot inside the six yard box.

The only positive for Liverpool yesterday was the return to first team action of Harry Kewell. Kewell was an 80th minute subsitute for Gonzalez and he was straight into action, almost creating an equaliser for Fowler but unfortunately the Liverpool number nine was unable to connect with the Aussie's clever pass across the six yard box.

Gabriel Paletta did put the ball in the net for Liverpool but his header from a corner was correctly ruled out for offside as the Reds fell to their ninth away defeat of a disappointing league season.
