Reds can only draw

Liverpool missed the chance to go third last night when they were held to a goalless draw by Portsmouth at Anfield.

The Reds had the majority of the possession but struggled to break Pompey down in the final third and failed to test former Liverpool goalie David James.

Liverpool's best chances came from Jamie Carragher, playing in the centre of midfield, who picked the ball up in the middle of the Portsmouth half before closing on goal and shooting wide, and Sami Hyypia who saw a wicked shot from 40 yards just clear the crossbar.

Steven Gerrard thought he'd won the game in injury time when his diving header connected with Dirk Kuyt's cross but the ball went into the side netting not the goal.
