Reds end Villa's run

Aston Villa were unbeaten before yesterday's visit to Anfield and that was after trips to the Emirates Stadium and the Bridge. Their unbeaten start to the season was ended by a fifteen minute spell of excellent football from the Reds however.

Liverpool started yesterday's game brightly and took charge early on. Dirk Kuyt hit a shot over the bar after good work on the left from Luis Garcia while John Arne Riise saw a couple of shots go narrowly over the crossbar.

The Reds had plenty of possession early on without really testing Thomas Sorensen in the Villa goal. That all changed after half an hour.

Liverpool had a free kick just inside the Villa half. The ball was passed to Jamie Carragher who sent a deep cross into defensive partner Sami Hyypia who had gone up for the free kick. Hyypia headed the ball down towards Dirk Kuyt, who controlled the ball on his chest before hammering home an unstoppable shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

The goal was especially sweet for Kuyt as his father was at Anfield for the irst time since the Dutch striker's move to the Reds.

It was 2-0 eight minutes later. Steve Finnan sent what looked like a harmless cross into the eighteen yard box which was met by Peter Crouch and the England striker was somehow able to get his foot to it and volley home his eighth goal of the season.

On the stroke of half time the Reds made it 3-0 with the best goal of them all. Steven Gerrard picked the ball up on the left, stormed across the edge of the eighteen yard box before cleverly leaving the ball there for Kuyt. Kuyt sent a pass to Crouch who laid it off for Luis Garcia to score his first league goal of the season.

In the second half Villa pulled a goal back through Agbonlahor and Pepe Reina had to beat away a Chris Sutton header to avoid a nervy finale but other than those chances the Reds continued to dominate.

Luis Garcia had a chance to score his second of the day after good work on the right from Gerrard but he somehow screwed his shot wide of Sorenson's post.

Gerrard almost scored his first Liverpool goal of the season after a good team move but his shot cannoned back off the post.

Sissoko and Kuyt combined to set up subsitute Robbie Fowler in the last minute to wrap the game up but Fowler's shot hit the side netting. That was the last action as the Reds got back to winning ways in the Premiership in impressive style.
