Reds finish on a win

The Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at White Hart Lane yesterday to end the 2007/8 season positively. Andriy Voronin and Fernando Torres scored the goals.

The first half yesterday was a non event. With fourth place guarenteed for Liverpool and Spurs capable of finishing no higher than tenth the first hour of this game was played as if the close season had already started. There were a few chances with Torres, Voronin and Ryan Babel attempting to open the scoring for the Reds while Dimitar Berbatov brought a fine save out of Pepe Reina.

Liverpool stepped up a gear after the break with Steven Gerrard and Torres combining for the Spaniard to find space in the box but his shot was saved by the legs of Spurs keeper Radek Cerny.

Robbie Keane and Steed Malbranque had chances at the other end before Voronin finally broke the deadlock on 68 minutes. Torres played the ball through for the Ukrainian who took it under control with his first touch and slotted home with his second.

Berbatov almost equalised immediately with a smart volley but Reina again showed why he is the Golden Gloves winner with another good save.

It was soon 2-0 when Torres received the ball on the edge of the box, skipped past Hutton like he wasn't there and stroked the ball into the net. Torres also hit the bar with a clever volley moments later as Liverpool really came to life.

Subsitute Yossi Benayoun should have made it 3-0 when Alvaro Arbeloa found him in space in the six yard box but the Israeli didn't realise how much time he had and instead of taking a touch tried to flick the ball goalwards with his first touch and saw it roll wide.

That was to be the last chance of the game and the season as the referee then brought an end to the Reds' 2007/8 campaign.
