Reds go through

The Reds have booked their place in the Carling Cup fourth round draw with a 2-1 win over Crewe at Anfield last night. Daniel Agger and Lucas Levia scored the goals.

Liverpool started the game brightly and had plenty of posession in the early minutes without really creating an opening. However, their first sight of goal after 15 minutes brought about the opener.

David Ngog received the ball just outside the penalty area and was immediately fouled. From the resulting free kick Agger hammered home. At this stage it seemed a case of how many the Reds could rack up but Crewe soon forced their way back into the game.

Crewe got the ball into the Liverpool penalty area and after a goalmouth scramble Michael O'Connor levelled for the Railway men.

The Reds looked to restore their lead before half time and maybe should have done so. Agger sent a fierce drive over the bar on the half hour mark and minutes later Sami Hyypia headed wide after meeting a good cross from Jermaine Pennant.

Just before the interval Hyypia had another good chance but saw his volley blocked. The rebound fell to Ngog but his shot was also blocked before Damien Plessis shot over the bar.

Ryan Babel had a good chance minutes into the second half but his shot was too close to the keeper who palmed it over the bar for a corner. Ten minutes later the Reds did regain the lead when Lucas Levia headed in another good cross from Pennant.

Fernando Torres was introduced for the last 25 minutes and had a few half decent chances but the scoreline remained 2-1. It was enough.
