Reds go top

The Reds are now three points clear of Chelsea and Hull after winning 1-0 in Stamford Bridge yesterday thanks to a tenth minute Xabi Alonso strike.

Chelsea had the first chance yesterday when Nicolas Anelka took advantage of a slip by Alonso to steal in and play the ball through to Deco. However, Jamie Carragher was quickly across to block the shot.

Liverpool then won a throw deep in the Chelsea half. Alvaro Arbeloa threw the ball towards Dirk Kuyt who flicked it on towards Robbie Keane. Chelsea half cleared the ball but only as far as Alonso who hit it first time. His shot took a deflection which wrong footed Petr Cech and gave the Reds the lead. After all the jammy deflected goals the rent boys have scored past us in recent seasons this was poetic justice. Karma as Earl Hickey would say.

Minutes later Albert Riera shrugged off Jose Bosingwa, stormed into the area and shot into the side netting with Keane and Gerrard waiting in the six yard box for a cross.

Gerrard then came close to doubling the Reds lead; his venomous 25 yard shot was dipping in before Cech managed to get a couple of fingers to it and deflect it over the bar.

It wasn't all one way traffic, Deco had another chance just after the half hour mark but with Carragher and Daniel Agger in comanding form Pepe Reina didn't have a lot to do.

Chelsea upped the tempo after the break but still couldn't break the Reds down and the best chances of the second half were all Liverpool's. Kuyt fired just wide from 20 yards before Alonso hit the post from a free kick with Cech stranded.

Subsitute Ryan Babel almost got on the end of a brilliant one touch pass and move counter attack but Gerrard's through ball was just a mite too heavy. Babel then created space for himself with a great turn before shooting narrowly wide.

In the end 1-0 was enough as the Reds became the first team to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the league since 2004 and moved three points clear of them at the top of the Premiership.
