Reds go top

The Reds spent last night at the top of the league after a 3-0 win over West Brom at Anfield in the evening kick off. Two first half goals from Robbie Keane and an injury time strike from Alvaro Arbeloa gave Liverpool the points.

Rafael Benitez's side were in control from the off, creating a couple of early chances for Keane. Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun were playing well on the wings and getting the ball into the box on numerous occasions.

The first was after 13 minutes. Riera's clever flick sent Dirk Kuyt clear, he crossed the ball over to Benayoun who then played it in for Keane but the Irishman's shot was straight at Scott Carson.

Benayoun then carved out a chance for himself before shooting narrowly wide. The Israeli then thought he'd won a penalty for the Reds when he ran onto a Steven Gerrard through ball and saw his shot deflected wide by the arm of Baggies defender Jonas Olsson. Unfortunately the referee only awarded a corner.

Keane then had another chance when Javier Mascherano played him in but he couldn't connect properly with the ball and scuffed his shot. The pressure was bound to pay off however and the opener finally came on 34 minutes.

Gerrard played in Keane with another great through ball and the Reds' number 7 calmy lifted the ball over the advancing Carson and into the net.

With a first league goal for the Reds under his belt Keane became more confident and doubled our lead nine minutes later. Fabio Aurelio played a magnificent ball down the left wing for him to run onto, he rounded Carson and slotted home.

Liverpool continued where they left off in the second half, looking to get Keane away at every opportunity. He was onto a couple of good passes early on but the linesman's flag stopped him with the West Brom defence beaten.

With Keane playing so well it was disappointing to see him subsituted with 20 minutes left. However, since that subsitute was Fernando Torres it can be overlooked.

In injury time Arbeloa wrapped the game up. Benayoun won the ball back on the byline and played in the overlapping right back. Arbeloa ran into the area before placing the ball in the top left hand corner of the net for 3-0 and return to first place.
