Reds held

The Reds were held to a 1-1 draw in a game that was depressingly similar to plenty of last season's performances last night. Liverpool dominated the posession but were unable to turn that posession into chances.

Despite having all the play in the first half and being in total command of the match, the Reds only carved out one chance in the opening 45 minutes. Andriy Voronin laid the ball off to Dirk Kuyt, who hammered the ball against the bar with the keeper beaten. The ball did bounce down over the goal line but the referee and his assistants failed to spot that and the scores remained level.

Feyenoord took the lead on the stroke of half time against the run of play when Andwele Slory stole a yard on John Arne Riise and closed in on goal. His shot cannoned back off the post but diver Drenthe was there to stroke home the rebound.

It wasn't much better for the Reds in the second half. Xabi Alonso did force a save out of the goalkeeper just after the hour mark when Jermaine Pennant found him from a corner but that was the only shot on target until Steven Gerrard's 73rd minute equaliser.

Subsitute Ryan Babel, in his most impressive appearance yet, played in Gerrard on the 18 yard box and the Liverpool skipper strode past one defender and then slid the ball under the keeper to bring the Reds level.

The Reds did threaten a winner with Babel producing a snap shot but then the referee decided to intervene and try and help Feyenoord find a winner. Firstly he awarded a penalty against Alvaro Arbeloa for heading the ball in the box, then he awarded the Dutch side a free kick on the edge of the area after Javier Mascherano had fouled Denthe. Denthe's blatant foul on Gerrard seconds earlier was ignored.

Justice was served however, when Pepe Reina first saved the penalty and then beat away the free kick. That was the last action of the game and the draw meant Porto won the Port of Rotterdam tournament.
