Reds held

The Reds were held by League One side Luton after another poor performance yesterday afternoon. Liverpool started brightly, with Ryan Babel warming Luton keeper Dean Brill's hands with a snap shot after only thirty seconds. Five minutes later however, the Reds' passing game went to pot and Luton were allowed to control the game.

Liverpool should have gone 1-0 up three minutes into the second half when Dirk Kuyt's cross/shot fizzed across the goal. Yossi Benayoun connected with the ball at the far post but couldn't direct it goalwards.

Brill then made a fine one handed save from John Arne Riise's deflected shot- the first shot Riise has got on target since he scored against Barcelona almost a year ago- to keep the scores level.

Luton were creating chances themselves and their best one came minutes later when Darren Currie crossed for Drew Talbot. Talbot had a free header in the Liverpool six yard box but sent the ball over Itanje's crossbar.

A defensive error by Luton on 72 minutes allowed subsitute Andriy Voronin to run clear on goal. His shot was saved but Peter Crouch was on hand to slot home the rebound.

Liverpool's lead lasted three minutes. Talbot put another excellent cross into the Reds' penalty area and in attempting to clear the ball, Riise volleyed against his own arm and the ball dropped into the net for the equaliser.

The teams meet again on Tuesday week and Liverpool know they must vastly improve if they are to remain in the competition.
