Reds make official approach for Babel

After being turned down with a £10m bid by the player's club Ajax, Rafael Benitez increased his offer to the Dutch club's asking price of £13.5m yesterday.

"Liverpool are serious and have made another offer of a lot more," confirmed Ajax technical director Martin van Geel.

"Because they want him so much, it looks as if Babel will be off and Ajax will be losing him."

Babel's agent, Winnie Haatrecht has confirmed Liverpool's approach to Ajax but insists that no talks have yet taken place.

"I can confirm that Ajax have received an official offer from Liverpool. Ryan until now hasn't spoken with the club," he said.

"Only when Ajax tells us they have agreed terms and tell us we can speak with them.

"Then we'll be in phase two and in that phase we will listen and see what Liverpool's plans are with Ryan.

"Only after that discussion will we begin on the financial side but we aren't that far yet as we have to wait on the clubs reaching an agreement."
