Benitez has accepted that the pressure he is under as Liverpool manager will only ease when he leads the Reds to the Premiership title.

"It is impossible to ignore the pressure [of being a manager] until you have won the league title," the boss told students at the University of Madrid, where he was picking up the Agustin de Betancourt medal yesterday.

"You know you have a responsibility, there are demands on you and you have to get used to it. Every week you have to pass a test.

"As a manager you have to try to be respectful, correct, sometimes positive, other times not so much.

"A coach has to try to protect his players so that they can express themselves. When things go badly, it is the manager's responsibility. That is normal. It is innate in football."
