Reds progress

Liverpool beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the San Siro last night to record a 3-0 aggregate win and book their place in the last eight of the European Cup.

Inter started the game brightly last night and created most of the early openings. Zlatan Ibrahimovic crossed for Esteban Cambiasso after five minutes but his shot was blocked by Lucas Levia.

Two minutes later Julio Cruz tried his luck from 25 yards but his low rasping shot was pushed round the post by Pepe Reina. Ibrahimovic then played in Cruz but his shot went across goal and the wrong side of the post.

Inter weren't having it all their own way with Fernando Torres taking advantage of a slip by Cambiasso to run into the box, skin Rivas Lopezin before seeing his shot blocked by keeper Julio Cesar from a tight angle.

The second half was a different story, especially after Nicolas Burdisso was sent off for two yellow cards on 51 minutes, the second one for a high and late challenge on Lucas, correctly awarded whatever bitter Bluenose Andy Gray may say.

Inter had another chance to open the scoring after an hour when Martin Skrtel gave the ball away to Ibrahimovic on the edge of the box but the striker sent his shot wide of the post again.

Fernando Torres showed him how it should be done on 64 minutes when he brought down Fabio Aurelio's cross on the edge of the 18 yard box, turned Chivu and then fired a low volley past Cesar.

The goal meant Inter had to score four times in 26 minutes. An impossible task with the Reds defence in commanding form and Jamie Carragher desperate to keep a clean sheet on his record breaking 100th european appearance.
