The Frenchman has come under-fire from fans and media alike during a season of desperate struggle at Anfield, yet the Reds boss is more than happy to admit that qualification for the Champions League was his aim before the beginning of the campaign.

Houllier told France Football of is heady ambition for the Anfield club, saying: "Since last summer the aim is clear for everyone. We need to get qualification to the UEFA Champions League and to finish in the top four in the league.

"We are still in the running and the team will never give up, even in moments of despondency. It is not their style, nor is it mine. In this club victory and a trophy culture is vital."
