Reds sign Irish youngster

16-year-old John Paul Kelly, who is already a Republic of Ireland youth international, will join the club in July from League of Ireland side Lourdes Celtic.

While the Irish FA's description of the young Irishman as a 'a competent central midfield player' will hardly set pulses racing, Liverpool believe they have pulled off quite a coup.

Liverpool under-17s coach Dave Shannon told the club's official website: "Next season we are looking at bringing eleven or twelve new scholars in, which is obviously very good. Most of the under-16's that've figured this season will be here and we've got one boy coming over from Ireland, John Paul Kelly, who we call Joxer.

"He's a central midfield player and has been over to train with us a few times. He's a very infectious type of player, similar to Davey Thompson. He'll be a big asset to the team."
