The 20-year-old reserve team player, who made his one appearance for the first team in a Worthington Cup victory over Southampton last season, was shot in the buttocks outside the Wonderbar club in Slater Street.

The player, who was out drinking with friends, will be out of action for up to a month according to the Merseyside club after being released from the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

Merseyside Police are keen to reassure city revellers that crime in Liverpool is not reaching excessive proportions despite a spate of shooting incidents in recent days.

"This latest incident has to be put in context," insisted a Merseyside Police spokeswoman.

"Slater Street is one of the busiest streets in the city centre and is a sea of people. Police officers can't see six or seven people in front of them.
Between 80,000 and 100,000 people come out in Liverpool and more than 90% of them would have no idea anything had happened."
