Reds win

Two goals from Luis Garcia and one from Steven Gerrard were enough to see off Bordeaux last night.

Rafael Benitez sprung a suprise before kick off when he named the same team in successive matches for the first time in 99 games. After Liverpool's best performance of the season against Aston Villa on Saturday prehaps it wasn't that much of a suprise.

Luis Garcia opened the scoring on 23 minutes when he met Gerrard's cross on the edge of the six yard box and smashed it into the back of the net. It was no more than the Reds deserved as they'd been passing the ball around well and easily had the better of the possession.

Bordeaux pushed for an equaliser at the start of the second half but were only able to force one save out of Pepe Reina, their other shots all going high and wide.

Bordeaux's resistance was then ended when they were reduced to ten men. Midfielder Fernando Menegazzo was deservedly sent off for a head butt on John Arne Riise, who had to leave the pitch under UEFA rules and change his shirt since his old one had blood on it.

Liverpool were quick to punish Bordeaux for their lack of discipline. Steven Gerrard almost immediately raced onto a Bolo Zenden through ball and slotted home his first goal of the season.

Garcia made it 3-0 with a quarter of an hour remaining when he intercepted a poor pass and ran through to score his second of the night and his third goal in four days.

Momo Sissoko almost scored his first Liverpool goal moments before the end but he saw his dipping voley pushed over the bar by the Bordeaux keeper. Sami Hyypia also could have wrapped the game up but headed over with the goal at his mercy.

3-0 was the final score and it was another excellent home performance from the reds who have now scored ten times in their last three games.
