The Reds beat Swiss side FC Lucerne 2-1 thanks to first half goals from Lucas Levia and Andriy Voronin. Both goals were excellently taken finishes.

Lucas opened the scoring after only ten minutes after some fine play outside the box from Yossi Benayoun and Daniel Pacheco resulted in the Spaniard playing a delightful reserve pass into the box for Lucas to run onto and slot home.

Liverpool went to sleep after the goal and FC Lucerne were able to equalise a minute later. A long hoof forward caught out Philipp Degen who failed to notice the attacker coming in behind him. He headed across goal and Gavranovic headed in a simple equaliser.

The equaliser didn't rattle the Reds who continued to play some classy football around the FC Lucerne penalty area. The Swiss keeper had to be alert a couple of times to stop Benayoun and Pacheco restoring Liverpool's lead.

It was Voronin who put Liverpool back in front after 37 minutes and there was nothing the goalkeeper could do about it. The Ukrainian received the ball just inside the penalty area, saw the keeper on the edge of the six yard box and cool as you like lobbed it over his head.

Liverpool continued to create chances after the interval through Voronin and Pacheco but the second half fizzled out as a consequence of numerous subsitutions throughout the half.

Ryan Babel, Javier Mascherano and Dirk Kuyt all made their first appearances of the new season in the second half.
