Liverpool took the lead at Kingston Park after 11 minutes when Neil Mellor ran onto Paul Anderson's through ball to hammer a shot into the bottom corner of the net. It was Mellor's second goal in successive starts after returning from injury.

Newcastle were level on 33 minutes however when Carl Finnigan scored past Paul Willis after the Liverpool defence failed to clear the ball properly.

Mellor, playing as a lone striker, had chances to restore the Reds' lead but saw his chances saved by some good goalkeeping before he understandably tired in the second half.

Newcastle scored the winner seven minutes from time after David Raven underhit a back pass to Willis which was picked up by Newcastle striker Chris Farman.
