Anthony Le Tallec scored the Reds' goal in a game that saw Vladimir Smicer play his first full 90 minutes since his injury, and the return of Harry Kewell who had an hour's run out.

Reserve team boss Hugh McAuley was pleased with the performance but believed his side should have won comfortably.

"It was good to see Harry Kewell back and I thought he acquitted himself very well. He did well up front and created some good opportunities to score a goal." said McAuley.

"It was a good night for the likes of Harry Kewell and Vladimir Smicer to get a game under their belt.

"We had enough chances in the first half an hour to be at least 3-0 up and we had a lot of possession and played some good football. I thought the second half was a bit of an anti climax as we took our foot off the pedal and went 1-0 down.

"We conceded a careless goal when Pellegrino gave the ball straight to Milner who scored. You pay the penalty for being careless and get punished for mistakes.

"Thankfully we came back and Le Tallec scored a good goal. Scott Carson made some great reflex saves once again and distributed the ball very well and it bodes well for the future.

"I thought John Welsh did very well in midfield again. John is a battler and he keeps going. You know what you will get off John every game and he is what I would call a true Liverpool player."
