Reserves well beaten

The only positive of the night for the Reds was the form of Neil Mellor who scored twice to take his tally to five goals in seven games and was narrowly denied a hat-trick.

The rest of the young Liverpool side were poor, especially keeper Patrice Luzi who had a nightmare of a game.

Reserve boss Hugh McAuley was very disappointed in his team:  "It was a disappointing night for us and defensively it wasn't good enough. Patrice Luzi will not be happy with himself and the fifth goal."

Neil Mellor's performance should put him in contention for his first start of the season for the first team next Tuesday against Millwall in the Carling Cup. If last night's game was anything to go by his team-mates will have a much longer wait.
