Former Man Utd trainee Ramon Castille gave the Reds the lead after only ten minutes after a mistake from the United goalkeeper. United tried to get an equaliser but they were easily kept at bay by excellent defensive performances from Godwin Antwi and Miki Roque in the centre with captain David Raven assisting at left-back and Antonio Barragan at right back.

Liverpool had other chances, with Barragan, Paul Anderson and the returning Neil Mellor all coming close. Mellor played his first game in almost a year when he came on for Castille in the 72nd minute.

Liverpool wrapped up the points in the 87th minute when Austrian winger Besian Idrizaj scored with a header from a corner.

The only low point of the night was an injury to Darren Potter who was stretchered off in the 25th minute. However, it was later revealed that he'd suffered nothing more serious than a back spasm.
