Reserves win

A strong Liverpool side featuring the likes of Jerzy Dudek, Alvaro Arbeloa, Fabio Aurelio, Javier Mascherano, Bolo Zenden, Jermaine Pennant and Robbie Fowler were too much for Blackburn's reserve team as the Reds strolled to a comfortable 4-1 win.

The attitude of the senior players was good as the Reds took charge from the off. The opening goal came after 22 minutes as Pennant and Arbeloa combined well on the right to set Pennant on a good run. The winger then played in Fowler whose lay off found FA Youth Cup hero Craig Linfield in space to score his third goal of the week.

Arbeloa almost made it 2-0 moments later but was denied by a good save and then Zenden headed a good chance over the bar. Blackburn then had a chance to equalise but shot wide.

It was a costly miss as Liverpool went up the other end and made it 2-0. Pennant crossed for Fowler at the back post who brought the ball under control and then chipped a delightful finish over the Rovers goalkeeper.

Pennant scored the third himself with a smart finish from 30 yards out to make it 3-0 after earlier seeing a couple of good chances saved.

Pennant was provider again for the fourth when his through ball sent Zenden one on one with the keeper and the Dutch midfielder made no mistake, calmy slotting home for 4-0.

Rovers scored a consolation goal just after the hour mark past subsitute goalkeeper Daniele Padelli but with Gabriel Paletta, captain Jack Hobbs and then subsitute Ronald Huth dominating at the back there was never any chance of Blackburn getting back in the game.
