Reserves win

A youthful Liverpool reserve team racked up an impressive away win against their Newcastle counterparts at Kingston Park last night. Five of the FA Youth Cup final squad were in the starting line up while another five were on the bench.

Jay Spearing, Stephen Darby, Robbie Threlfall, Ryan Flynn and Craig Linfield all played against Newcastle in the FA Youth Cup semi-final and started against a Geordie side that contained most of their FA Youth Cup team last night.

Liverpool dominated the game from the off with captain Jack Hobbs and FA Youth Cup captain Jay Spearing controlling the midfield. The Reds created plenty of chances with Lindfield seeing a couple of chances go wide and another saved by the keeper.

Hobbs and Paul Anderson both came close to opening the scoring before Liverpool finally scored the goal their play deserved. Spearing curled the ball into the net from distance after 73 minutes to finally send the Reds into the lead.

It was 2-0 seven minutes later when Spearing turned provider, setting up Lindfield who finished from close range for his fourth goal in his last three games, three of which have now come against Newcastle.

Two minutes from time subsitute Ray Putterill wrapped the game up with a debut goal at reserve level to cap an excellent evening's work for Gary Ablett's side.
