Reserves win

Gary Ablett's side finally played their first league match of 2008 after two postponements when they faced Bolton at the County Ground. Liverpool had gone into the Christmas break top of the reserve league and continued their good form last night.

Liverpool started the game brightly with Emiliano Insua, Ray Putterill and Ryan Flynn combining to create an early chance for Jordy Brouwer that Ian Walker in the Bolton goal managed to block with his legs.

Daniel Pacheco then created a chance for Damien Plessis but the midfielder's shot went narrowly wide. Bolton's defence got into the game after this and the Reds found it hard to create many more chances during the first half.

After the break Liverpool got back on top however. Brouwer, Pacheco and Putterill all had shots saved before the Reds finally made the breakthrough on 55 minutes when Pacheco raced clear to hammer home his first goal for the club.

Ryan Flynn and Jay Spearing both had chances after that but both were denied by the former England goalkeeper.

Liverpool finally doubled their lead in the 83rd minute when Putterill scored from the spot after Brouwer had been brought down. Subsitute Nathan Ecclestone wrapped the game up on 89 minutes with another penalty.

The win saw the Reds return to the top of the reserve league North, two points ahead of Sunderland, who they face next week.
