Reserves win

Liverpool reserves came from a goal down to beat Wigan reserves 3-1 at the Racecourse Ground last night thanks to strikes from Andras Simon, Jay Spearing and Jordy Brouwer.

Gary Ablett's side went a goal down after only four minutes last night when Daniel Ayala dithered on the ball in his own area, allowing Tomasz Kupisz to race in ahead of him and slot the ball past Peter Gulacsi.

The goal rocked Liverpool who struggled to get into the game in the first half. They created a couple of half chances through Krisztian Nemeth and Jay Spearing but it wasn't until the second half that the Reds came to life.

The equaliser came three minutes into the second half when Andras Simon, making his first start for the reserves in the league, connected with a Spearing corner inches from the goal line and headed over.

The goal saw Wigan collapse and Liverpool were able to pass the ball about with ease and show the form that won them the league. Nemeth exchanged passes with Simon before shooting narrowly wide, and then saw an excellent 20 yard strike palmed over the bar.

Spearing also tried his luck from 20 yards before subsitute Brouwer saw the keeper off his line and saw his 35 yard shot go narrowly wide.

A second goal was coming and it duly arrived on 67 minutes. Jay Spearing took a free kick from 25 yards out and with all the Wigan rearguard expecting a cross into the penalty area, the captain buried the ball inside the left hand post with a goal reminiscent of Gary McAllister's 2001 derby winner.

The three subsitutes wrapped the game up minutes before the end. Craig Lindfield found Gary Mackay-Stevens out wide on the left and his cross was headed home by Brouwer to end the league season on a high note.
